West Assam Milk Producers’ Cooperative Union Limited
NDDB has been managing West Assam Milk Producers’ Cooperative Union Limited (WAMUL) since 2008. NDDB is providing technical and manpower support for milk procurement, processing, marketing and training and capacity building activities. The brand “Purabi” is well recognised and is increasingly positioning itself as a premier dairy brand not only in Assam but also in all states of North East region. WAMUL’s milk procurement has increased to more than 51 TKgPD from about 34,000 dairy farmers covering 2,400 villages.
East Assam Milk Producers’ Cooperative Union Limited (EAMUL)
To augment dairy development in Assam through dairy cooperatives, a tripartite agreement was signed between the Government of Assam, National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), and EAMUL. On April 1, 2023, the administration of EAMUL was handed over to NDDB.
Milk procurement operations have started in 7 districts of EAMUL’s operational area. EAMUL has established a transparent milk procurement system. Payment to the pourer members is done only to their bank accounts.
Besides milk procurement activities, the Milk Union is also providing services such as Artificial Insemination, Ration Balancing, Animal Health services through EVM, demonstration of Urea Treatment of Straw and silage making to the dairy farmers. Quality cattle feed, area-specific mineral mixture and bypass protein meal are also supplied at a subsidised rate.
North East Dairy and Foods Limited
NDDB has been managing the affairs of West Assam Milk Producers’ Cooperative Union Ltd and has successfully turned around the operations and put on track a robust development model in cooperative dairying in the North Eastern State of Assam to take it further to a larger scale in the area.
NDDB has formed a joint venture company (an unlisted public company) along with the Government of Assam with a 50-50 equity contribution. This company will implement the “Assam Dairy Development Plan” and function as an apex body to the cluster milk unions.
The said joint venture – North East Dairy and Foods Limited was registered on 17th January 2023. The company has set an ambitious target of handling 10 lakh litres of milk per day by the end of the project period of 7 years through cooperative dairying across Assam.
Jharkhand State Cooperative Milk Producers’ Federation Limited
NDDB continues to manage the Jharkhand State Cooperative Milk Producers’ Federation Limited (JMF) since 2014. NDDB is primarily involved with institution building and creation of the milk procurement infrastructure, establishing the processing infrastructure, creation of the marketing channels and brand building for JMF. JMF sells its dairy products under the brand name ‘Medha’. The milk federation achieved daily average milk procurement of about 189 TKgPD from more than 35,000 members covering about 3,100 villages.
Varanasi Milk Union
Government of Uttar Pradesh handed over the management of Varanasi Milk Union to NDDB on 01 Nov, 2021 for streamlining the operations of the milk union. NDDB has helped the union to increase the procurement of milk to 74 TkgPD from around 21,000 milk producers.
In a unique initiative, NDDB completed the installation of the biogas plant of 4,000 cubic meters in the premises of Varanasi Milk Union which can suffice the electrical energy needs of the Varanasi Dairy plant. The biogas plant was successfully commissioned in March 2023.
Vidarbha Marathwada Dairy Development Project
Vidarbha Marathwada Dairy Development Project (VMDDP) was conceived to alleviate farmer distress in the drought prone and suicide prone Vidarbha and Marathwada regions of Maharashtra. VMDDP is being jointly implemented by NDDB (through its subsidiary Mother Dairy Fruit and Vegetable Pvt. Ltd) and the Government of Maharashtra. Since its inception, the project has rapidly expanded its footprint to cover more than 3,300 villages and around 35,000 dairy farmers. The average milk procurement increased to over 3 lakh kg per day.
Ladakh Milk Federation
NDDB took over the non-operational Ladakh Milk Federation (LMF) in October 2023, with the objective of providing livelihoods to dairy farmers in the region and supplying fresh pasteurized milk to the consumers as well as the Indian Army.
Maharashtra Rajya Sahakari Dudh Mahasangh Maryadit (MRSDMM)
On the request of Government of Maharashtra, NDDB took over the management of Maharashtra Rajya Sahakari Dudh Mahasangh Maryadit (MRSDMM) on 2 May 2024 for which an agreement was executed between NDDB and Government of Maharashtra on 15 April 2024 for handing over of management and operations of MRSDMM and its ancillary units to NDDB for a period of 5 years. NDDB aims to strengthen the apex organisation and in turn improve the livelihoods of dairy farmers in the state.
